2006 2007 2009

Now that the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum has been released, press coverage is starting to interpret the documents. This article from the NYT is cautious and brief, but not outright negative, including the quote What earlier generations held as sacred remains sacred and great for us, too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful.
Pope Eases Curbs on Celebrating the Latin Mass
July 9, 2007
A truly confusing Slate article with a datline of the 9th where the author talks about the impending motu proprio, yet after it had been released (on the 7th). The confusing dates aside, he touches nicely on the beauty of the Latin Mass but misses the point when he asked how many people will want to return and how many priests are now capable of doing anything in latin. The story should have been about the MILLIONS who want the Latin Mass but have been unable to attend. But at least they didn't let Christopher Hitchens write this one (if you'll excuse the sarcasm).

Pat Buchanan wrote an excellent piece over at WorldNetDaily touching on some Latin Mass history and also some of the modern controversies surrounding the recent Motu Proprio.
A triumph for traditionalists
July 10, 2007
dst all the bad press about the Summorum Pontificum, there are a few oped's that are finding their way into the presses. In this opinion piece Paul Kokoski touches on what most traditionalists feel, in stark contrast to the spin being pushed in the NYT and other large newspapers.
Return of the Latin Mass
July 12, 2007
A thoughtful and well-researched article from Jewish Week about the recent motu proprio Summorum Pontificum that references both Abraham Foxman's comments and Pat Buchanan's response. If this article represents the Jewish response more accurately than Mr. Foxman's, then I dare say that liberal Catholic reaction has been comparatively childish.
'Mass' Confusion Over Papal Edict
July 15, 2007
A short article in The Courier News about the Traditional Latin Mass in the Chicago diocese with a neutral to positive spin on the TLM and the Summorum Pontificum. They even go so far as to get a quote from someone affiliated with the ICRSP shrine.
Latin Mass popular, even before pope's ruling
July 16, 2007
Citing unnamed sources CWM reports that the Pope regularly practices the Traditional Latin Mass in private and had renovations made which (allow) for the Pope to celebrate Mass in the ad orientem posture. It is shocking that this information was made public, and a huge pat on the back for orthodox Catholics.
Pope Benedict uses older ritual for his private Mass
July 23, 2007
A great article from Lorraine Murray of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about the return of the traditional liturgy. Being a Latin Mass attendee, she understands the real issue: ...the pope is not doing anything radical. He is merely giving Roman Catholics greater access to something that is their birthright.. Now if we could only get trads writing for all the major newspapers of the world.
The Latin Mass not cause for contention
July 29, 2007
An article in The Scotsman about the lack of vestments and training, but tries to get in to the news on a deeper level. When talking about why people have returned to the Latin Mass Philip writes, ...many people missed the Latin rite's sense of mystery and awe and the centuries-old Gregorian chant that went with it.
Return of Latin mass sparks old vestment hunt
